Safety First is the Best Prevention
One of the very best holidays of the year, the Fourth of July, is rapidly approaching. As is true with any festive occasion, it is important to enjoy the moment without forgetting to think about prudence and safety.
Situated as it is in the middle of summer, the Fourth of July is often associated with numerous fun holiday rituals with friends and family, but also plenty of potential for injuries to both people and property.
- As with other holidays, unwise consumption of alcohol can lead to DUIs, drownings at lakes and swimming pools, as well as other accidents
- Fireworks are fun if properly used, but they are explosive and incendiary devices that if carelessly deployed or used by minors without supervision can lead to significant physical injuries, fires, criminal mischief, and/or liability
- Barbeques and outside campfires are often a wonderful way to bring flavor to the holidays, but remember to take care with flammable substances and to safeguard against children who may inadvertently stumble into touching or stepping into something that could cause burns
- With swimming pools, beware of jumping or diving into shallow areas or anywhere you have not already carefully checked in advance, and assign someone to keep an eye on the pool; this is especially true if the activity involves little toddlers, non-swimmers, and/or consumption of alcohol
- At family gatherings, especially those involving young children, be sure to check under and behind vehicles before backing up or pulling out of the driveway
