Having a nice clean carpet that you feel comfortable walking on with your toes sprawled out helps your home feel more like a home. But how do you know when it’s time that a regular carpet cleaning isn’t sufficient and it’s time to replace your carpet all together? Typically carpets last 5-15 years, however sometimes its necessary to replace carpets before its supposed lifespan ends. Here are some things to look for to help you know when it’s time to dig up your old carpet and put in new carpet.
Mold: The number one thing that you need to look for when figuring out whether or not it’s time to replace carpet is looking for mold. Damp areas such as basements may be more susceptible to mold than other places in your household. Be sure to check all areas of your carpet to make sure that there is no mold forming.
Stains: Everybody occasionally spills something on their carpet that may discolor it. Sometimes it may be a simple fix with a cleaner that can get rid of the stain. However, if your carpet is enduring multiple stains you may want to consider replacing your carpet. Appearances matter when it comes to carpets, it’s important to remember that stains are not something to pass over.
If you want to remove the stain from your carpet be sure to use trusted products. Some products or remedies for stain removal end up causing more damage to your carpet than the stain itself. Be sure to be careful and only use products that you can have absolute faith in.
Odors: If your carpet develops foul odors, it’s probably time to change your carpet. Odors in your carpet could mean that there is mold in your carpet that can be toxic or it could mean other bacteria is hidden in your carpet. These bacteria could be unsafe to be around, so be sure to replace your carpet if there is an odor that does not go away.
Ratting: After a while, the fabric of a carpet could start to rat together and that fresh new feeling that your carpet once had will be gone. If your carpet shows immense amount ratting it may be time to replace it. Ratting in carpet makes it less comfortable for your feet, can be a sign that your carpet is dirty, and could mean that the resistance that your carpet once had is gone. Some ratting that happens is a result of heavy foot traffic. When you replace your ratted carpet where heavy foot traffic took place, be sure to use durable carpet.
If you notice one or more of these signs it’s probably time to replace your current carpets. For more advice or general information about our property management services, please contact us online or call us directly at 210-787-3876.
